World’s Biggest Pilgrimage Now Underway, And Why You’ve Never Heard of it!

have gathered in Iraq’s holy city of Karbala to attend the mourning ceremonies marking Arbaeen, the 40th day after the anniversary of martyrdom of the third Shiite Imam.
There’s another peculiar feature of Arbaeen. While it is a distinctively Shia spiritual exercise, Sunnis, even Christians, Yazidis, Zoroastrians, and Sabians partake in both the pilgrimage as well as serving of devotees. This is remarkable given the exclusive nature of religious rituals, and it could only mean one thing: people regardless of color or creed see Hussein as a universal, borderless, and meta-religious symbol of freedom and compassion.
Around 20 million pilgrims from all over the world have gathered in Iraq’s holy city of Karbala to attend the mourning ceremonies marking Arbaeen, the 40th day after the anniversary of martyrdom of the third Shiite Imam.
Arbaeen is the 40th day after Ashura in which Imam Hussein (as) and his companions martyred. In Arbaein, due to some historical documents, Imam Sajjad (AS), Hazrat Zeinab (the sister of Imam Hussein), and some other relatives of the Imam, came back to Karbala and mourned for Imam and other martyrs of the Ashura.
